YOUTH MULTI SPORT CAMP

AUGUST 14-16, 2020

This past summer our athletes were invited to participate in the inaugural year of the WOE G2S Camp, led by former NBA player, Myck Kabongo. This multi-sport camp encouraged and challenged athletes to step out of their comfort zone and learn new skills in a variety of different sports including basketball, football, ball hockey, boxing, and yoga. The goal of the camp was to bridge the gap between race, socioeconomic status, and culture while providing a sense of unity. They accomplished this through the promotion of teamwork and unity among people of ethnicities.

The coaching staff for this three day event was beyond exceptional and we were honored to have been asked to be apart of the team. Each sport had a professional instructor in their respected field - with Myck Kabongo and Coach Jelani (I Can Ball Academy) leading basketball. Greg Morris, professional CFL running back, sharing his  football expertise and putting together great drills that all the campers enjoyed throughout the duration of the camp. Pavel Barber, world renowned stick handling specialist, was also in attendance leading the Hockey station. Lastly, Seamus Egan-Elliot lead our morning and afternoon group sessions with a strong focus on health and wellness. Being mentored by these high caliber athletes was truly an invaluable experience for all the campers.

In addition to this star studded coaching staff, the campers were able to hear from Toronto's own, Kayla Grey, TSN sports anchor. She shared her inspiring story with the campers and touched on the challenges she faced as a young black woman breaking into an industry dominated primarily by men. Grey became the first black woman to ever host a flagship sports highlight show in Canada and continues to make her imprint in the industry.

It was refreshing for the campers to hear from someone who is on the other side of the camera, and really highlighted that even if you don't have a career as an athlete in your respected sport - there are many other opportunities to work around the sport you love.

What stands out most about the experience of the WOE G2S camp, was the community involvement fueling it. From using the East View Community center to run the camp out of, to having daily lunches catered by local small businesses in the area (Square Boy, Classic Juice Co and Pizza Nova), to the  involvement of community leaders (firefighter Doug, ONPOINT basketball coverage from Drew Ebanks). It was a great display of comradery and collaboration and we are fortunate that Toronto Top Tier was able to be apart of it.
